Who We Are

Green Hearts Organization is a Community Based Organization (CBO) in Kenya. We work with local communities to restore ecosystems and care for the environment.

Our profile describes a mix of practical work: growing and planting trees, helping to rehabilitate forests, taking part in environmental clean-ups, speaking up on climate change and supporting conservation. We have an important connection to the Aberdare forest landscape, particularly the Wanjerere area of Kangema in Murang’a County.

We believe communities should take part in caring for the places they live beside, and that they should share in the benefits when those places are healthy.

How we work

Our Approach

Drawn from the way our profile describes our work.

Communities take part

We invite local people to take an active part in restoring degraded forests, so they share ownership of the result and the benefits of sustainable forest management.

Knowledge shared, decisions shared

We aim for community engagement, knowledge sharing and collaborative decision-making, so that restoration can last.

Trees grown from seed

We offer seeds and seedlings, including indigenous trees, fruit trees and grafted fruit trees, for planting and restoration.

Sustainable harvesting and energy

We prioritise sustainable harvesting and promote eco-wood based bio-energy from sustainably harvested wood.

Local climate adaptation

We work with communities on climate-resilient farming, drought-resistant crops and water conservation strategies, to help them adapt to changing weather.

Learning starts young

We train primary school pupils in environmental stewardship, so young people gain the knowledge and skills to look after their surroundings.
